Sam Goulden’s Top Ten Golf Courses

#1 Royal Isabela, Isabela, Puerto Rico

The most challenging and beautiful golf course in the world in my opinion. I will play here every year as long as I can play golf.

#2 Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, CA

Site of the LA Open, Amazing golf course with challenge and distinct holes. I’ve not yet had the opportunity to play here. It is on my list of courses to play in the next 12 months.

#3 Lost Canyons Golf Course, Simi Valley, CA

Extremely difficult course in an amazing setting. As this course went through a transition in ownership, they let the more challenging shadow course die. No fairway grass in a hot valley in CA on top of one of Pete Dye’s most challenging designs made this course my favorite place to practice and play in LA.

#4 Black Hall Club, Lyme, CT

Very old school feeling course in the northeast. I played Qualifying for the Travelers Championship here in 2014. Love the feel of north east golf.

#5 Oakmont CC, Oakmont, PA

Site of many US Opens, My favorite US Open site due to the difficulty of the course. On my list of courses to play this year.

#6 Boone Valley Golf Club, Augusta, MO

Great example of Missouri Golf. A sense of being alone in nature can’t be avoided. My number one favorite course in the midwest.

#7 The Quarry, La Quinta, CA

I played mini tour events there. It’s a long, challenging course in a very cool setting in the CA desert

#8 Rancho Park 3-par, Rancho Park, CA

The best place to practice your wedge game in LA. I take students here whenever I’m in town. It’s a great place to groove your swing.

#9 Westchester Golf Course, Westchester, CA

A short course that you can play under the lights. Jet fuel and noise pollution from nearby LAX makes this course interesting. The number of holes all jammed together in an urban setting make this course fun. I’ve played hundreds of rounds here and will always love this course.

#10 Butler National Golf Club, Oak Brook, Ill

Former host of the Western Open, Great display of chicago golf. I first played here in 2005. I played one of my best rounds at the time. I will always remember that round.
